Brigitte Helm was catapulted to stardom when she was selected to play the dual role of working girl Maria and her evil robot double in Fritz Lang's futuristic spectacular Metropolis (1926). Reportedly, her first film role almost became her last due to Lang's insistence upon “ realism “ during a burning-at-the-stake scene.
