Emil Zatopek ( 1922 - 2000 ) was a Czech long-distance runner best known for winning three gold medals at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki. He won gold in the 5000 metres and 10,000 metres runs, but his final medal came when he decided at the last minute to compete in the first marathon of his life. He was nicknamed the "Czech Locomotive" for his multiple golds.Zátopek was the first athlete to break the 29-minute barrier in the 10 km run (in 1954).

Three years earlier, in 1951, he had broken the hour for running 20 km. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest runners of the 20th century and was also known for his brutally tough training methods.

Renata Tebaldi ( February 1, 1922 - December 19, 2004) was an Italian lyric soprano, popular in the post-war period.Her major breakthrough came in 1946, when she auditioned in Milan for Arturo Toscanini. Toscanini was favorably impressed, calling her "voce d'angelo" (angel voice).

Tebaldi made her La Scala debut that year at the concert which marked the reopening of the theatre after World War II. She sang the "Prayer" ("Dal tuo stellato soglio") from Rossini's biblical opera, Mose in Egitto, as well as the soprano part in Verdi's Te Deum.Toscanini encouraged her to sing the role of Aida and invited her to rehearse the role in his studio.

She was of the opinion that the role of Aida was reserved for a dramatic soprano, but Toscanini convinced her and she made her role debut at La Scala in 1950 alongside Mario del Monaco and Fedora Barbieri in a performance conducted by Antonino Votto. This was the greatest success in her still young career and was to launch her international career.

In 1953 her voice was used to dub Sophia Loren's singing in the film version of Aida.

Max Schmeling (1905-2005) became World Heavyweight Champion in 1930. In 1932 Schmeling scored a twelfth round knockout of the previously undefeated Joe Louis in 1936. 2 years later Joe Louis knocked out Schmeling in the first round - after 124 seconds.

Despite his supposed associations with nazism, used for propaganda to smear him as a Nazi villain, it became known long after the Second World War that Schmeling had risked his own life to save the lives of two Jewish children in 1938.

He remains a sporting legend in Germany today, and he also helped his friend Joe Louis later in life.

Friedrich Gulda (16 May 1930 - 27 January 2000) was an Austrian pianist who performed in both the classical and jazz fields. Together with Joerg Demus and Paul Badura-Skoda, Gulda formed what became known as the "Viennese troika".

In 1982, Gulda teamed up with jazz pianist Chick Corea and wrote a Prelude and Fugue with a theme suggesting swing. ( Keith Emerson performed it on Emerson, Lake & Palmer's The Return of the Manticore ).

In addition, Gulda composed "Variations on The Doors' 'Light My Fire'". Gulda is widely regarded as one of the most outstanding piano players of the 20th century.

Emmerich Kalman (1882 –1953) was a Hungarian-born composer of operettas.

Kalman and Franz Lehar were the leading composers of what has been called the "Silver Age" of Viennese operetta during the first quarter of the 20th century. He became well-known for his fusion of Viennese waltz with Hungarian csardas. Even so, polyphonically and melodically, Kalman was a devoted follower of Giacomo Puccini, while in his orchestration methods he employed principles characteristic of Tchaikovsky's music.

Despite his Jewish origins he was one of Adolf Hitler's favorite composers.

John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie ( 1917 – 1993) was an American jazz trumpet player, bandleader, singer, and composer dubbed "the sound of surprise". Together with Charlie Parker, he was a major figure in the development of bebop and modern jazz. He taught and influenced many other musicians, including trumpeters Miles Davis, Fats Navarro, Clifford Brown, Arturo Sandoval, Lee Morgan, Jon Faddis and Chuck Mangione.

In addition to featuring in the epochal moments in bebop, he was instrumental in founding Afro-Cuban jazz, the modern jazz version of what early-jazz pioneer Jelly Roll Morton referred to as the "Spanish Tinge". Gillespie was a trumpet virtuoso and gifted improviser, building on the virtuoso style of Roy Eldridge but adding layers of harmonic complexity previously unknown in jazz. Dizzy's beret and horn-rimmed spectacles, his scat singing, his bent horn, pouched cheeks and his light-hearted personality were essential in popularizing bebop.

Rudolf Khametovich Nureyev (1938 –1993) was a dancer from the former Soviet Union, considered one of the most celebrated ballet dancers of the 20th century. Nureyev's artistic skills explored expressive areas of the dance, providing a new role to the male ballet dancer who once served only as support to the women.

In 1961 he defected to the West, despite KGB efforts to stop him. According to KGB archives studied by Peter Watson, Nikita Khrushchev personally signed an order to have Nureyev killed.

In 1982, he became a naturalized Austrian.

Michael Joseph Jackson (1958 –2009) was an American recording artist, dancer, singer-songwriter, musician, and philanthropist. Referred to as the King of Pop, Jackson is recognized as the most successful entertainer of all time by Guinness World Records. His contribution to music, dance, and fashion, along with a much-publicized personal life, made him a global figure in popular culture for over four decades. Eugene Curran "Gene" Kelly (1912 –1996) was an American dancer, actor, singer, film director and producer, and choreographer.

A major exponent of 20th century filmed dance, Kelly was known for his energetic and athletic dancing style, his good looks and the likeable characters that he played on screen. Although he is probably best known today for his performance in Singin' in the Rain, he was a dominant force in Hollywood musical films from the mid 1940s until the demise of this form in the late 1950s.

Kelly was the recipient of an Academy Honorary Award in 1952 for his career achievements. He later received lifetime achievement awards in the Kennedy Center Honors, and from the Screen Actors Guild and American Film Institute; in 1999, the American Film Institute also numbered him 15th in their Greatest Male Stars of All Time list.

Anna Yuryevna Netrebko (born 18 September 1971) is an operatic soprano. She now holds dual Russian and Austrian citizenship and currently resides in Vienna. She has been nicknamed "La Bellissima" by fans.

Under Gergiev's guidance, Netrebko made her operatic stage debut at the Mariinsky at age 22, as Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro. She went on to sing many prominent roles with the Kirov Opera, including Amina in La sonnambula, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, and Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor.

In 1994, she sang the Queen of the Night in Die Zauberfloete with the Riga Independent Opera Avangarda Akademija under conductor David Milnes.

In March 2006, Netrebko applied to become an Austrian citizen, receiving her citizenship in late July.

Herman Nitsch used to be one of the most controversial and scandalous artists from Austria.

In the 1950es he created the concept of the Orgies Mysteries Theater, a six-day event that continues to captivate him throughout his career and still is performed each year in Prinzendorf, Lower Austria.

Between 1960-66 he performed several Art actions and exhibitions resulting in various court trials and three prison sentences.

Since 1989 he has been teacher at the Academy of Visual Arts in Frankfurt.

Helene Bertha Amalie "Leni" Riefenstahl (1902 - 2003) was a German film director, actress and dancer widely noted for her aesthetics and innovations as a filmmaker. Her most famous film was Triumph des Willens (Triumph of the Will), a propaganda film made at the 1934 Nuremberg congress of the Nazi Party.

Riefenstahl's prominence in the Third Reich along with her personal friendship with Adolf Hitler thwarted her film career following Germany's defeat in World War II, after which she was arrested but released without any charges.

Triumph of the Will gave Riefenstahl instant and lasting international fame, as well as infamy. Although she directed only eight films, just two of which received significant coverage outside of Germany, Riefenstahl was widely known all her life. The propaganda value of her films made during the 1930s repels most modern commentators but many film histories cite the aesthetics as outstanding.

The Economist wrote that Triumph of the Will "sealed her reputation as the greatest female filmmaker of the 20th century".

Felix Graf von Luckner (1881 -1966) was a German nobleman, navy officer, author and noted sailor who earned the epithet Der Seeteufel (the Sea-Devil) -- and his crew that of Die Piraten des Kaisers (the Emperor's Pirates) -- for his exploits in command of the sailing commerce raider SMS Seeadler (Sea Eagle) in 1916-1917.
It was his habit of successfully waging war without any casualties that made him a hero and a legend on both sides.
He was the great-grandson of Nicolas Luckner, Marshal of France and commander-in-chief of the French Army of the Rhine.
During the Second World War, Hitler tried to use him for propaganda purposes, though, as a Mason, he was not in one of the Nazi's favoured groups of people. Luckner refused to renounce his membership of the Masons or the various honorary citizenships granted in the US, and consequently he suffered by having his bank account frozen. In 1943, he saved the life of a Jewish woman, Rose Janson, whom he provided with a passport he found on a bombsite, and who subsequently managed to escape to the US via a neutral country.

Max Schmeling (1905-2005) became World Heavyweight Champion in 1930. In 1932 Schmeling scored a twelfth round knockout of the previously undefeated Joe Louis in 1936. 2 years later Joe Louis knocked out Schmeling in the first round - after 124 seconds.
Despite his supposed associations with nazism, used for propaganda to smear him as a Nazi villain, it became known long after the Second World War that Schmeling had risked his own life to save the lives of two Jewish children in 1938.
He remains a sporting legend in Germany today, and he also helped his friend Joe Louis later in life.

Robert Elisabeth Stolz (1880 –1975) was an Austrian songwriter and conductor as well as a composer of operettas and film music.

The rise of Nazi Germany and the Anschluss, and he moved first to Zuerich and then to Paris, where in 1939 he was interned as an enemy alien. With the help of friends he was released and in 1940 made his way to New York.

In America, Stolz achieved fame with his concerts of Viennese music, starting with "A Night in Vienna" at Carnegie Hall. As a result, he received many invitations to compose music for shows and films, and he received two Academy Awards nominations: "Waltzing in the Clouds" was nominated for Best Original Song in 1941, and his score for It Happened Tomorrow was nominated for Best Dramatic or Comedy Picture Score in 1945.

In 1946 Stolz returned to Vienna, where he lived for the rest of his life. In the 1960s and 1970s he made a number of recordings of operettas by composers such as Johann Strauss, Franz Lehár, Emmerich Kálmán, and Leo Fall, whom he had known previously.

Austrian Mountaineer Fritz Moravec Lot: Autograph and Special Mail

1959: Authentic signatures be the Austrian mountaineering team who climbed the Dhaulagiri in 1959. The team was led by the famous mountaineer Fritz Moravec.

The Autographs come with a Certificate of Authenticity. The members signed a b/w photo postcard with view at the tent and lager at the Dhaulagiri mountain.

Along with the signed card comes a special postal cover, addressed to Fritz Moravec. It was sent as rocket mail in 1962 as so called “Kaprun Grossglockner Raketenpost vom Moserboden”.

W.W.II.: Theresienstadt concentration camp: Album with 24 photos from the lager. Die Photos have been issued in Theresienstadt ( Vydal: Pamatnik narodniho utrpeni v Terezine). The have been taken after World War 2 but are vintage, no reprints. All have been trimmed to fit in an album.

Each on is 4,5 x 3,5 inches ( 11,5 x 8 cm ).

The last 4 pages are with Czech handwriting. The photos are clean, not creased. The album itself is not gem but o.k.

Gilbert Roland (1905 –1994) was a Mexican-born American film actor.

He was born Luis Antonio Dámaso de Alonso in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico and originally intended to become a bullfighter like his father. When the family moved to the United States, however, he became interested in acting. He was often cast in the typical "Latin Lover" role.

Roland's first major role was in The Plastic Age (1925). In 1927, he played Armand in Camille opposite Norma Talmadge, with whom he was romantically linked, starred in several Spanish language adaptations of American films and continued as a romantic lead.

Beginning in the 1940s, critics began to take notice of his acting and he was praised for his supporting roles in John Huston's We Were Strangers (1949), The Bad and the Beautiful (1952), Thunder Bay (1953), and Cheyenne Autumn (1964). He also appeared in a series of films in the mid 1940s as the popular character "The Cisco Kid".

Great, small lot of 3 items by Brigitte Bardot:

1) Color photo, depicting Bardot in pantsuit of the 60s. (The photo has been repoducend and signed later). Authentic autograph. 5 x 7 inches.
2) Early, hand-made card with magazine-snippet. Signed by Brigitte Bardot in the early 1970ies.
3) Postcard of the young, sexy Bardot. There is a chance that this is NO authentic autograph but a autopen. It could be an original but the quality of the signature has characteristics of an autopen ( it might be just the glossy surface and the ink which leave this impression).

All 3 are in fine condition.
