A member of a generation of British actors that included Sir Laurence Olivier and Ralph Richardson, Sir Alec Guinness possessed an astonishing versatility that was amply displayed over the course of his 66-year career.

Dubbed „the outstanding poet of anonymity“ by fellow actor Peter Ustinov, Guinness was a consummate performer, effortlessly portraying characters that ranged from eight members of the same family to an aging Jedi master.

Seven years later, Lean would cast Guinness in the novel's screen adaptation; the 1946 film was the actor's second screen engagement, the first being the 1934 Evensong. Born Zarah Hedberg in Sweden, she came up through the ranks of small-town Swedish vaudeville and operetta to establish herself on the Viennese stage by 1935, appearing in Ralph Benatzky's Axel an der Himmelstür. UFA studios in Berlin had lost Marlene Dietrich to Hollywood in 1930, and had since then been seeking a suitable replacement.

Although not a strong actress, Zarah Leander's looks combined the sultry sensuality of Dietrich with the Nordic iciness of Greta Garbo.

Leander's singing voice was suitable for Viennese. These aspects of Leander's talent proved enough to convince UFA to sign Leander as a contract player in 1936. She first hit it big with movie audiences in two films directed by Detlef Sierck (later known by his Hollywood name of Douglas Sirk) Zu neuen Ufern (1937) and La Habanera (1937). Sirk had the wisdom to engage composer Ralph Benatzky to write the music for the first of these films and by the second, had established Leander's basic character of type: an exotic foreign entertainer who, after being duped through some unscrupulous means, manages to recapture her dignity and find fulfilment through a twist of fate. While Sirk fled Nazi Germany not long after La Habanera was completed, this formula was able to sustain Leander's unchallenged popularity in Germany for her next nine features.

In 1943, Leander received a communiqué from Hitler's minister of propaganda, Joseph Goebbels. Under the terms of Leander's 1936 contract, her salary as a UFA contract player was deposited directly into her Swedish bank account. Goebbels informed Leander that her contract was to be re-negotiated into Deutschmarks and that the time had arrived for her to become a German citizen.

In return, Goebbels offered Leander property in East Prussia, but she would also have to surrender her Swedish-based businesses and property to the Reich. Her German home had already been destroyed by bombs, so Leander left for Stockholm, abruptly ending her career as the top operetta star in Nazi Germany... Leander's association with Nazi Germany and its film industry proved poisonous to her reputation and many Swedes reviled her as a Nazi collaborator. In 1958, Leander finally managed a comeback in the Viennese production of Madame Scandaleuse, an operetta written by Peter Kreuder. From that point until her retirement in 1972, an older and wiser Leander was celebrated as a legendary performer in German-speaking lands. She dies at age 74 in 1981.

collect.at Antiques and unique Collectibles Premier General Syrovy Autograph, 1934. Important Czech Politician: "3.5 x 5.5 inch. b/w photo with an authentic Autograph of Premier Syrovy.

The autograph comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.

September 1938 the Czech Government accepted the terms agreed on at the Munich conference and should give immediate way to Germany’s occupation of Sudeten territory and leaving Czechoslovakia placed at the mercy of Germany, having been deprived of all her frontier defenses. The Czecho-Slovak Government, which was not represented at the conference, was given only a few hours in which to accept the plan. General Syrovy, the premier, said in a broadcast that they had to choose between the death of the nation and the loss of territory. In Prague the day was regarded as one of national mourning. This first Government of General Syrovy resigned on October 4 and was reformed on October 5, again under General Syrovy. But the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had passed from the hands of Dr. Kamil Krofta, for many years the closest collaborator of Dr. Benes and a warm supporter of the League of Nations, into the hands of Dr. Frantisek Chvalkovsky, former Minister to Rome and a convinced adherent of Fascist orientation. On the same day Dr. Benes resigned as President of Czechoslovakia and withdrew into private life."

Donovan Philips Leitch (usually known simply as Donovan) (born May 10, 1946) is a British musician. Emerging from the British folk scene, Donovan shot to fame in Britain in early 1965 after a series of showcase TV performances. His success was initially restricted to Britain, but after signing with the American Epic Records label and joining forces with producer Mickie Most, he developed an eclectic but very successful style that blended folk, jazz, pop, psychedelic and world music.

Donovan quickly rose to become one of the most famous and popular British recording artists of his day, producing a string of trans-Atlantic hit albums and singles between 1966 and 1970. He also became a close friend of The Beatles and was one of the few artists to collaborate on songs with them. Donovan's commercial fortunes waned after he parted ways with Most in 1969, and although he continued to perform and record sporadically in the Seventies and Eighties he gradually fell from favor, with his gentle musical style..."

Jim Henson Autograph: The Creator of The Muppets. CoA. 8 x 10 - col8785

Jim Henson Autograph: The Creator of The Muppets. CoA. 8 x 10 - col8785: "Jim Henson autograph on 8 x 10 color photo print, signed with green pen. Fine condition.

Additional letter from “The Muppets”, New York.

The letter states that the photos has been signed by Jim Henson personally.

The photo shows Jim Henson along with some of his favorite puppets: Miss Piggy, Fozzie The Bear, Kermit The Frog and others.

The Muppets have been created by Jin Henson ( 1936 – 1990 ) and from its first broadcast in 1976 to its 1981 finale, The Muppet Show was groundbreaking television. A syndicated variety show starring a troupe of puppets, it became more popular than anyone but its creator, Jim Henson, could have imagined. During its five seasons of inspired insanity, it was broadcast in more than 100 countries.

The wonderful children's show Sesame Street, also starring Henson's Muppets, had been broadcast since late 1969. For Henson, its success was a mixed blessing, as network executives began to see the Muppets strictly as children's entertainment. (Item #col8785)
