large Carpet from the Imperial Palace


( Forbidden City ) in Peking


At the upper border we can find 5 Chinese characters referring to the place it has been used: " The Jing Ren - Palace of the Forbidden City " in Beijing, where Emperor Kangxi was born.
This so called " Jing Ren Palace " used to be the palace of the first wife or the favorite concubine of the Chinese Emperors. As this carpet belonged to a female  member of the Imperial court, a phoenix, the symbol of the Empress is to be found in the centre of the carpet.
